Cherie Call
“Understandable Christian music” was how a Baptist host introduced Cherie Call at Nashville’s legendary Bluebird Café, where she performs regularly.
Drawing from the simple yet defining moments of life, whether difficult or joyous, Cherie creates musical stories filled with faith that listeners can relate to. In her latest album, Beneath These Stars (March 2005), she offers her hopeful outlook in an acoustic blend that feels more like a conversation between friends over mugs of steaming milk flavored with hazelnut (one of Cherie’s personal favorites).
“Life is always going to throw some craziness your way,” Cherie said. “Sometimes you have every right to feel frustrated, but you also have every right to move on and be happy. Eventually you just have to pick one or the other. When I take a good look I always notice there's so much to be thankful for in this world.”
Cherie’s story begins in Mesa, Arizona, with a family never lacking in love. Against a backdrop of Arizona sunsets, Cherie began singing at age three and wrote several songs before she turned 13. Childhood struggles helped shape her optimistic attitude and strong character as she learned not to dwell on the hard times, but to focus on what Heavenly Father does to strengthen and offer peace.
Furthering her education at Brigham Young University, Cherie graduated in music in 1997. While developing her songwriting skills and working to perfect her voice, Cherie “realized what it means to have a dream and follow through with it.”
Those dreams became a reality when she recorded and released three independent albums, Taken (1997), One Star (1999), and Heart Made of Wind (2000). In 2001 she was added to the Deseret Book artist line-up and released He Gives Flowers to Everyone (2001) and The Ocean in Me (2002) in addition to being featured on numerous compilation albums and soundtracks.
Cherie’s music has garnered several Pearl Awards from the Faith Centered Music Association including Contemporary Album of the Year, Inspirational Song of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year, as well as recognition for her songwriting and musical coordinating on the 2000 Banff Award-winning film, True Fans.
In the summer of 2004, Cherie was a finalist in the prestigious Kerrville New Folk songwriting competition.
Self described as creative, approachable, and empathetic, Cherie could talk for hours about developing the potential that lies within. She said people often develop small, but good ideas, and that God can make them infinitely better than we could on our own.
“We need to ask God to touch our offerings and make our efforts better than they could be without His help,” she said.
What does Cherie hope listeners will take from her new album?
“Look at your own life and notice the beauty and hope,” she said. “Notice the presence of the Lord. Have fun, sit back, and enjoy.”
