The American Piano Quartet


One of the most popular and most requested ensembles to play Utah concert halls, the American Piano Quartet coaxes amazing music out of two grand pianos. Formed in 1984, the American Piano Quartet is a group of four pianists dedicated to performing and recording works composed and arranged specifically for two pianos/eight hands. They have toured throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Asia, the Philippines, and Europe.

The quartet is composed of four nationally and internationally known musicians who focus their careers in all areas of performance, teaching, composing, arranging, conducting, and administration.

ROBIN HANCOCK, a graduate of Eastern Washington University, Brigham Young University, and Boston University, is currently professor of accompanying and collaborative arts at BYU. He is a much-sought-after chamber musician and accompanist whose performing career has taken him throughout the United States and many countries.

SCOTT HOLDEN is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music in New York and was recently appointed professor of piano studies at Brigham Young University. He has been a Fulbright Fellow in Hungary; he has a distinguished career as a soloist and has performed on many occasions with orchestras throughout the United States.

PAUL POLLEI, professor emeritus of Brigham Young University School of Music, is a graduate of the University of Utah, Eastman School of Music, and Florida State University. He is the founder and artistic director of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and Festival and is active as a teacher, lecturer, recitalist, and international jurist who has presented master classes, lectures, and performances in more than 40 countries.

JEFFREY SHUMWAY is a graduate of Brigham Young University, the Juilliard School of Music, and Indiana University and is currently serving as chair of Piano Studies at BYU. His performing career has been distinguished by performances of complete cycles of the piano music of Maurice Ravel and the 32 sonatas of Beethoven.
